What is Linux?
Linux is an operating system, just like Microsoft Windows or Apple’s macOS. It’s what runs your computer behind the scenes, handling files, apps, hardware, and more.
But here’s the difference:
The Apartment Analogy
Think of your computer like an apartment.
Windows and macOS are like renting a furnished apartment from a big corporation. You can’t repaint the walls, remove the furniture, or even change the locks. The landlord has a spare key, and they're constantly checking in. Sometimes they snoop through your stuff or install cameras "for your safety." They also sell info about how you use the space to advertisers.
Linux is like owning your own place. You get the keys, the deed, and full control. Want to knock down a wall? Replace the plumbing? Paint every room black and neon green? No one’s stopping you. You decide who comes in, what gets shared, and how everything works. And if you don’t like how something is built? You can rebuild it, just the way you want it.
